Barney's Press Reviews
Massage
I opted for a straightforward therapeutic massage with therapist Barney Green.
This is a full body massage with essential oils, so, after a few questions about any specific complaints, Barney leaves to prepare the blend of Peppermint, Ginger and Clove oils to "help soothe my aching muscles" while I change out of my clothes and into a selection of towels "to protect my modesty".
The room is clean and warm and the background music was calming; however I will note, with some relief, it was not quite the usual massage music of sounds of the rainforest or whatever, but chilled-out beach bar music.
The massage was an eclectic mix of eastern and western techniques, noticeably the acupressure and stretching from Thai massage, and the long gentle kneading from Swedish and Therapeutic massage techniques. The combination and the attention to individual problem areas (par example my lower back from an old sporting injury) meant that this massage was quite different from my years of experience as a spa bunny.
Compared with a set routine and pre-mixed oil selections at most spa massages, and in contrast to the concentration and at times painful deep tissue work in a physiotherapy setting, the tailored blend of the two was excellent, particularly effective and relaxing. A day on from my massage and I can walk up stairs properly again.
